Your Ultimate Guide to Power and Conflict Poems: How To Link Themes!

If you're studying the Power and Conflict anthology for GCSE Literature, you’ll know that comparison is everything.

🌟 Key idea:
Every poem explores some form of power, conflict, or human experience — but they do it differently. Your job is to compare them cleverly!

🎯 Here’s how to do it easily:

✅ Pick common themes:
Some big ones include:

  • Power of nature (OzymandiasStorm on the Island)

  • Effects of conflict (RemainsWar Photographer)

  • Power of memory (PoppiesKamikaze)

  • Abuse of power (My Last DuchessLondon)

✅ Find different methods:
How does each poet show the theme? Through:

  • Imagery?

  • Structure (enjambment, caesura)?

  • Tone (bitter, reflective, angry)?

✅ Use these sentence starters for comparisons:

  • "Similarly, in ___, the poet explores..."

  • "However, unlike ___, the poet in ___ presents..."

  • "Both poems demonstrate..."

🔍 Example for Power of Nature:

"In Ozymandias, Shelley presents the power of nature through the decaying statue that has been overcome by the sands of time, highlighting nature’s dominance over human achievements. Similarly, in Storm on the Island, Heaney shows nature's overwhelming force as the community braces against violent storms, emphasising humanity’s vulnerability."

🏆 Top Tip:
You don't need to know everything about every poem. Just have 2-3 strong comparisons up your sleeve — quality matters more than quantity.
