What I Wish I Knew Going Into Year 11 — A Letter to My Younger Self
Dear Me (the slightly stressed, slightly clueless, slightly hopeful version),
You’re about to step into Year 11—and whether you realise it or not, this is going to be your year. Not because everything will be perfect (spoiler: it won’t), but because this is the year you’ll discover just how capable you actually are. 💪🏾
Here’s what I wish you knew:
📚 You don’t need to have it all figured out. Seriously. Everyone looks like they have a plan, but most of us are winging it. What matters is that you keep showing up—one class, one quote, one attempt at Paper 1 Q5 at a time.
🧠 Revision doesn’t have to be soul-crushing. You’ll find ways that work for you. Flashcards. Doodles. Voice notes. Teaching your dog about Romeo and Juliet (he’s Team Mercutio, by the way).
😩 You’re allowed to have bad days. There will be weeks where you stare at a blank page and feel like giving up. That’s not failure. That’s being human. Rest. Then come back swinging.
✨ Confidence isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about trusting that when the time comes, you’ll figure it out. You will.
And one more thing:
📖 English will surprise you. The books you think are boring? They’ll sneak up on you. You’ll get angry at characters. You’ll find lines that feel like they were written just for you. You’ll write an essay that makes you proud. You’ll probably even find a way to make banterduring your conversations with friends. And that counts.
Keep going. Future You is cheering you on—and she’s doing just fine.
With love, Someone who made it out the other side 💫
P.S. I run a Sunday Masterclass every Sunday 📅, where we dive into topics like poetry analysis and comparison in depth. It’s interactive, fun, and insanely helpful for boosting your English skills. Join us this coming Sunday – see you there! 😄🎓
