These 8 Words Are RUINING Your Inspector Calls Essay

GCSE students often use weak and simplistic words to describe Mr. Birling in An Inspector Calls. I explain this in my latest YouTube video:

Why am I focusing on Mr Birling? 🤔

It’s because Mr Birling is a character you can bank on possibly coming up in your exams, meaning you need to have an idea of what words to STOP using when writing about him and use alternative words your examiners will love.

🐣 PS: I’ll be having an INSPECTOR CALLS EASTER REVISION CLASS on 9 April at 5pm - 6pm and you can sign up here: https://www.firstratetutors.com/literature/inspector

Worst words you must ❌ AVOID ❌.. and what to ✅ USE ✅ instead:

Mr. Birling’s Personality and Attitudes:

  1. ❌ Rude → ✅ Arrogant, Condescending, Dismissive

    • “Rude” is too basic. “Condescending” highlights how he looks down on others.

  2. ❌ Selfish → ✅ Capitalistic, Self-serving, Exploitative

    • “Selfish” is vague. “Exploitative” emphasises how he profits at others’ expense.

  3. ❌ Proud → ✅ Hubristic, Overconfident, Self-important

    • “Proud” doesn’t capture his excessive arrogance. “Hubristic” captures his aloof nature.

  4. ❌ Dumb → ✅ Shortsighted, Naïve, Ignorant

    • “Dumb” is informal and vague. “Shortsighted” suggests he lacks awareness of the bigger picture.

  5. ❌ Wrong → ✅ Misguided, Complacent, Deluded

    • “Wrong” is too simple. “Complacent” suggests he is too comfortable to see change coming.

  6. ❌ Greedy → ✅ Materialistic, Status-obsessed, Mercenary

    • “Greedy” is overused. “Mercenary” suggests he values profit over people.

  7. ❌ Nervous → ✅ Defensive, Evasive, Resentful

    • “Nervous” suggests fear, but “defensive” and “resentful” highlight his unwillingness to take responsibility when the Inspector confronts him.

  8. ❌ Stubborn → ✅ Intransigent, Unyielding, Unrepentant

    • “Stubborn” is too simple. “Unrepentant” shows he refuses to change even at the end.

Happy revision and if you’re part of my Inspector Calls GCSE Class - I’ll be seeing you at 5pm on 9th April! 🐰
