Mr Birling Analysis: The ONE Word GCSE Examiners Love (Inspector Calls: 2026 GCSE Exams)

Happy Friday!

Can you believe Easter is almost here? If you are in Year 10 or 11 (or you’re the parent of a Year 10 and 11 student!) you will know that this marks 6 Weeks to the GCSE English Literature exams.

Now to help my students make the most of their Easter break (so this final holiday before their GCSE Exams doesn’t slip through their fingers!) I will be releasing YouTube videos and shorts each day going over different Literature topics!

If you follow me on YouTube, you will see today my newest video is on MR BIRLING and INSPECTOR CALLS:

PS: I’ll also be running an Inspector Calls GCSE Masterclass over Easter showing you how to go up by 3 GCSE Grades in Inspector Calls before your final exams.

Mr Birling is an extremely popular character that GCSE students always go for if he’s the “character” topic, but even for the “theme” question – students tend to write at least one paragraph on him.

What that means is – if you as a GCSE student go for him, make sure you write heavy-hitting points that make your essay stand out and impress your examiner!

How do you do this? Use this GRADE 9 word to describe him:

Mr Birling is “MYOPIC”:

1️⃣ Meaning: this means he is extremely short-sighted, ignorant and out of touch. Think of his foolish belief that the Titanic is “unsinkable” and how he dehumanised Eva as “labour”.

2️⃣ How to use this in a WINNING GCSE ESSAY:

Write the following point word-for-word when using the word “myopic” to describe him:

“Mr Birling is presented as a myopic capitalist, whose narrow focus on profit blinds him to the social responsibility he should have towards paying his workers more fairly. This ultimately led to Eva Smith’s tragic death, as his refusal to pay her fairly reflects the damaging consequences of selfish, short-sighted greed.”

I hope this helps! And as I said, I will run an Inspector Calls GCSE Masterclass on 8April showing you:
