If English Feels Pointless, Read This

You’ve probably asked yourself this before: What is the point of English? Like, truly. Why are we analysing poems by long-dead Victorians? Why are we decoding metaphors in books written a hundred years ago? Why are we writing about structure when you could be doing literally anything else?

Here’s my truth: English isn’t just about the books. It’s about you.

It’s about learning how to argue. How to persuade. How to understand someone else’s point of view, even if you don’t agree. It’s about noticing the tiny details others miss—the pause in someone’s voice, the power of one well-placed word, the shift in tone that changes everything.

πŸ’₯ When you analyse language, you’re sharpening your brain. 🧠 When you write creatively, you’re learning to express yourself clearly and confidently. 🎀 When you study characters, you’re building empathy and emotional intelligence.

And guess what? These aren’t just “exam skills.” They’re life skills.

πŸ’Ό Employers love good communicators.

πŸ—£ Friends trust people who can listen and articulate.

πŸŽ“ Universities crave students who can think critically and write fluently.

Even outside of school, English is everywhere: in song lyrics, news headlines, social media captions, job interviews, TikToks, wedding speeches, protest signs. If you’ve ever wanted to express yourself and be heard, English is your toolkit.

So no, it’s not pointless. It’s powerful. It’s underrated. And yes, sometimes it’s a slog. But it’s also the subject that teaches you how to see the world—and speak back to it.

You’ve got a voice. English just helps you use it better. πŸ’«
