How to revise for your UNSEEN POETRY Exam in 10 Days

Revising for your GCSE unseen poetry exam in just 2 hours is totally possible if you focus sharply on exam technique and past paper practice. E

⏰ 2-Hour Unseen Poetry Revision Plan:

🔹 ⏱️ 0:00–0:30 (30 mins): Learn the Essentials

  • Review key poetic techniques:
e.g. metaphor, simile, personification, enjambment, caesura, tone, imagery, etc.

  • Learn a structure for analysing poems:

    • SMILE = Structure, Meaning, Imagery, Language, Effect

    • Or use PETAL = Point, Evidence, Technique, Analysis, Link

✅ Goal: Be able to spot a few techniques and say how they create meaning or emotion.

🔹 ⏱️ 0:30–1:15 (45 mins): Practice a Full Unseen Poetry Question

  • Find a practice unseen poem

  • Spend:

    • 10 mins: Annotate the poem. Underline interesting language, tone shifts, strong emotions.

    • 25 mins: Write a response to this common question:

"How does the poet present feelings about [theme]?"

    • 10 mins: Read over and highlight where you:

      • Identified a technique

      • Explained its effect

      • Linked back to the question

✅ Tip: You only need 2–3 strong points for a good answer.

🔹 ⏱️ 1:15–2:00 (45 mins): Practice the Comparison Question (8 marks)

  • Use the same poem + a second one

  • Spend:

    • 5 mins: Compare the themes and techniques (make a quick table or bullet points).

    • 15 mins: Write your 8-mark response:

"Compare how the poets present [theme] in the two poems."

    • 10 mins: Check your answer—did you make clear comparisons? Did you compare techniques?

✅ Goal: Compare 2 ideas and 2 techniques, briefly but clearly.

💡 Final Tips:

  • Focus on what you do understand in a poem—don't worry if it's confusing.

  • Be specific: say what technique is used, what it does, and why it matters.

  • Use sentence starters like:

    • “This suggests…”

    • “The poet uses [technique] to create…”

    • “This contrasts with…”
