How To Pass The GCSE English Language Paper 1 (2025 Exams)

Paper 1 focuses on Creative Reading & Writing ✍️. You’ll analyse one fiction text and then create your own piece of creative writing.
- Total marks: 80 marks
- Total time: 1 hour 45 minutes

🔍 Section A: Reading (Q1–Q4) - 1hour

 

You’ll be given an extract from a 20th or 21st-century fiction text. The key here is to analyse and interpret the writer’s methods.

📄 Question 1: List Information

 

🔸 Marks: 4
🔸 Time: 5 mins
🔸 What to do: Find 4 simple facts from a specific part of the text.
➡️ Tip: Keep it short and lift directly from the text.

🎯 Question 2: Language Analysis

 

🔸 Marks: 8
🔸 Time: 10 mins
🔸 What to do: Zoom in on the writer’s use of language (words, phrases, techniques).
➡️ Structure:

  1. Identify a quote

  2. Analyse key words

  3. Explain the effect on the reader
    ✨ PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) is your best friend here!

🌀 Question 3: Structure Analysis

 

🔸 Marks: 8
🔸 Time: 10 mins
🔸 What to do: Discuss how the text is structured (beginning, middle, end).
➡️ Look for:

  • Shifts in focus

  • Changes in setting or mood

  • Flashbacks/foreshadowing
    ➡️ Tip: Use words like "At the beginning…," "The writer then…," and "By the end…"

💭 Question 4: Evaluation

 

🔸 Marks: 20
🔸 Time: 20–25 mins
🔸 What to do: Evaluate how well you agree with a statement about the text.
➡️ Structure:

  1. Agree/Disagree with the statement

  2. Use multiple quotes to back up your point

  3. Analyse language & structure

  4. Consider the writer’s intent
    ➡️ Remember: This is your biggest reading question—go into depth! 🔍

✨ Section B: Creative Writing (Q5)- 45 mins

 

Time to unleash your creativity! You’ll be asked to either:

  • Write a description based on a picture

  • Write part of a story

🔸 Marks: 40 (24 for content, 16 for SPaG—Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar)
🔸 Time: 45 mins

📝 Planning (5 mins)

 

Create a quick plan:

  • Setting 🌅

  • Characters 👥

  • Plot points 📈

  • Atmosphere/mood 🌫️

✍️ Writing (35 mins)

 

➡️ Aim for:

 
  • 5 paragraphs (beginning, build-up, climax, resolution, ending)

  • Varied sentence structures

  • Descriptive techniques (similes, metaphors, sensory language)

  • Punctuation for effect (! ? , ; :)

✅ Checking (5 mins)

 

Proofread for:

  • Spelling mistakes

  • Missing punctuation

  • Sentence clarity
