How to ANALYSE any GCSE exam question and get full marks!

The one thing that makes or breaks an English GCSE Exam is ANALYSIS and if you want to do well in your exams – you have to NAIL this skill.

I’m going to keep today’s lesson short, simple and sweet – I’ll show you STEP BY STEP exactly how to analyse and get full marks in GCSE English, especially in Language Paper 1, Question 2:

HOW TO ANALYSE MADE EASY:

Remember this analysis comes after you make a POINT, then you QUOTE. Once you do this – this is your ANALYSIS which goes into you “EXPLANATION”:

1️⃣ Step 1: Technique
Mention technique used in the quote. What does it show when you consider the question’s key words?

If you do just this – you’re operating at a Grade 4/ low 5 level.

2️⃣ Step 2: Word-level analysis

Zoom in on one word, label it and say what “associations” or “ideas” come to your mind when you think of that word. This is called “word-level analysis”.

When you do this – you’re hitting a higher Grade 5 / low 6.

3️⃣ Step 3: Reader effect

Mention how this makes us as readers feel! Are we scared? Anxious? Tense? Happy? Explain it and connect it to the question’s key words!

When you hit this level, depending on how much DETAIL you go into in each step, you’re operating at a Grade 6-9 level!
