GCSE Model Answer: Language Paper 1, Question 3 (8/8 answer)

⏰ GCSE Countdown: 51 Days Left ⏰

When it comes to exam practice – by far the BIGGEST issue students ALWAYS face is running out of time. There never is enough time to get the reading, writing and analysis done. Some questions are sacrificed, others are answered badly – because there is no time.

If this is something you struggle with, here’s exactly how you can claw back some time in GCSE English Language Paper 1. This is the MOST efficient way to not only write a perfect response in less time but it means you can use the extra time freed up for other questions!

The BEST way to get more time for the big mark questions in Language Paper 1, Question 3 is this… Contrast a quote from the “BEGINNING” and “ENDING” in 1 paragraph. Throw in how this changes the “tone” and you’ve covered EVERYTHING the question asks in 1 solid, winning paragraph.

✨In other words – your cheat code to pass Question 3 is – contrast beginning versus ending (structure) in one paragraph, link it to the question’s key words and you will easily hit 6, 7 or even 8 out of 8 marks – depending on your level of analysis!✨

Great – thanks for the tip - how do I do this?

I’m glad you asked! I’ll use an example from a past GCSE English Masterclass I did back in September 2025. This was a Paper 1 Masterclass where I shared with my students this same cheat code – which saved the lives of my November Resit GCSE students as well as my Year 10s and 11s.

Example model answer – full mark Question 3 response:

Here was the Paper 1 question:

1️⃣ Step 1: I selected these 2 quotes from the beginning and end of the extract I was analysing:

Beginning quotes- “fireball, the size of a trolley” / “Dorrigo”

End quotes - “the bonfire was somehow behind them” / “Ella”

2️⃣ Step 2: I then started my opening POINT talking about both beginning and end of the extract (linking it to the question).

Here’s my opening point in blue:

3️⃣ Step 3: Then I added my two quotes from the beginning and end of the Paper 1 extract:

Here’s the evidence in red:

4️⃣ Step 4: I then analysed, contrasting beginning and end as well as mentioning TONE:

Here’s my analysis in green – this is where most of your marks reside:

5️⃣ Step 5: I finished off by linking back to the question and its key words in my link:

Here’s the link in purple:

Here is the entire model answer:

If you practice this enough and work on your writing speed, I guarantee you’ll be able to write something like this in 5-6 minutes during your exam. That will free up your time to spend the remaining minutes on the bigger mark Question 4 and 5!

By the way, I will be going over Paper 1, Questions 3 and 4 in my Sunday Masterclass this Sunday – so if you need some extra practice for this paper, you’re very welcome to join in and ask me as many questions as you want!
