3 Descriptive Writing Mistakes That Are Losing You Marks

Today in my latest YouTube video with Mr Salles, we go over how to write the PERFECT descriptive writing essay for GCSE Language Paper 1, Question 5:

But what are the common mistakes students make? What should YOU avoid when preparing for this part of your exam?

GCSE students often make these 3 MISTAKES in descriptive writing:

1️⃣ Terrible, Clichéd Vocabulary

  • Mistake: Using overused words like nice, sad, dark, amazing, scary.

  • Fix: Replace them with precise, vivid words (gloomy instead of darkpiercing wail instead of loud sound).

2️⃣ Forgetting Mood & Atmosphere

  • Mistake: Descriptions that are flat and emotionless.

  • Fix: Think about how the scene feels. Is it peaceful? Mysterious? Ominous? Use words that match the tone.

3️⃣ Poor Structure & Flow

  • Mistake: Jumping from describing the sky to the ground to a random person without smooth transitions. Essays then seem disjointed and random

  • Fix: Use a clear structure. Zoom in from a wide scene to small details. Describe the less obvious using figurative language.

In fact, in my upcoming GCSE English Language Paper 1 masterclass, I’ll be dedicating a lesson going over Descriptive Writing and using my “camera zooming in method”:
