In my YouTube video I mention how students often make the same mistakes in their Power and Conflict GCSE essays every year (click on the image to watch):

Yet there are 3 Top Mistakes students tend to ALWAYS make each year in their Power & Conflict exams:
1️⃣ Poor Analysis of Poetic Techniques
❌ Mistake: Listing techniques without explaining their effect.
-
Example: “The poet uses alliteration and enjambment to make the poem flow.” (Too vague)
✅ Fix: Explain how the technique shapes meaning.
-
Example: “The enjambment in ‘Remains’ mimics the soldier’s stream of consciousness, reflecting his inability to separate past trauma from the present.”
2️⃣ Ignoring Context or Misusing It
❌ Mistake: Stating context without linking it to the poem.
-
Example: “Ozymandias was written during the Romantic era.” (Irrelevant if not linked to power and decay.)
✅ Fix: Connect context directly to themes.
-
Example: “Shelley, a Romantic poet, criticizes absolute power through Ozymandias, reflecting his opposition to tyranny.”
3️⃣ Poor Comparison Between Poems
❌ Mistake: Comparing poems superficially.
-
Example: “Both ‘Exposure’ and ‘Storm on the Island’ are about nature.” (Too broad)
✅ Fix: Compare deeper ideas and techniques.
-
Example: “Both ‘Exposure’ and ‘Storm on the Island’ portray nature as an unstoppable force, but while Owen presents it as a merciless enemy, Heaney suggests that fear of nature is partly psychological.”
