The One Point EVERY GCSE Student Forgets in An Inspector Calls! 🕵️‍♂️

If you’re studying An Inspector Calls, there’s one point most students completely forget. And it’s a shame, because it can instantly make your essay stand out and hit that Grade 8 or 9 level.

✨What is this point, you ask?✨

Most students focus on class, capitalism, socialism. But they forget that Priestley’s equally important top message was that of FEMINISM.

Remember, Priestley was a feminist.. and he was imparting a feminist, socialist message in the play. (This is POWERFUL analysis by the way.)

FEMINISM: A MISUNDERSOOD IDEA

🚨You may be tempted to roll your eyes and say, “aren’t feminists women who hate men and don’t shave their legs?

If you believe this - you’re not alone. In fact, most students (and adults) think this is what feminism means. It isn’t.

🌟 Feminism: it’s the belief that women and men should have equal rights.

If you agree we should treat women the same as men.. you’re a feminist. And guess what? Priestley was too! In fact:

1️⃣ Inspector Goole was Priestley’s mouthpeice

2️⃣ He gave a voice to Eva and also Sheila

3️⃣ Priestley DELIBERATELY makes women the victims in this play as a harsh feminist message to his audience that the way society treats women MUST CHANGE!

✨PS: Don’t forget I’m running an Inspector Calls class during October half term week: https://www.firstratetutors.com/october-literature

When I last ran this class (before summer exams) - one of my students got a Grade 9 in Literature - 10 marks above the GCSE Grade boundary:

HOW TO USE THIS IDEA IN YOUR ESSAY

When mentioning Priestley’s message (always a winner - this instantly puts your essay in Grade 6-7 territory), use these 2 analysis points:

➡️ Sheila: “Through Sheila’s transformation, Priestley promotes feminist ideas, suggesting that women are capable of moral strength and independent thought, challenging early 20th-century gender expectations.”

➡️ Eva: “Priestley uses Eva Smith’s mistreatment to criticise a society that punishes women for independence, reflecting his post-war belief in equality and progress.”

Don’t forget you can join my Inspector Calls October half term class where I’ll show students how to go up by 3 GCSE grades before their mockshttps://www.firstratetutors.com/october-literature

Here’s what one of my students’ parents had to say about my previous Literature Week:

Happy revision!
