Students ALWAYS get this WRONG in Poetry
I want to talk about a classic mistake GCSE students always make in poetry analysis. Specifically – Power & Conflict (and honestly – Unseen Poetry too!). This error which students always make loses them valuable A02 marks (technique) simply because they can’t tell the difference.
What is this mistake?
Most GCSE students are unable to tell the difference between FORM and STRUCTURE. Then when analysing and writing about these techniques – they mix it up, write one when they mean the other. So I want to explain what the difference is!
✨ STRUCTURE:
Structure is how the poem is ORGANISED:
- Beginning, middle and end
- Repetition
- Caesura
- Enjambment
- Volta
✨ FORM:
Form is the TYPE of poem:
- Sonnet
- Ballad
- Dramatic monologue
- Free verse
When writing your Power & Conflict GCSE Essay and comparing your two poems, don’t mix them up. Don’t say “the writer uses a sonnet and this structure shows..” – this is incorrect.
✨PRO TIP:
Make sure you mention STRUCTURE in a separate comparison paragraph and FORM in different paragraph. In fact, in my upcoming Power & Conflict GCSE Class (during October half term week - 30th Oct) I will advise students to structure their Power & Conflict essay in this order:
Power & Conflict GCSE Essay Structure:
- Paragraph 1: Language (both poems)
- Paragraph 2: Structure (both poems)
- Paragraph 3: Form (both poems)
🚨PS: I’ll write a model answer on the theme of WAR – so if you want to know how to do well in Power & Conflict and Unseen Poetry join here: https://www.firstratetutors.com/october-literature
✨Here’s what past students had to say about my classes✨

Happy revision! 😊
