How to Structure a Grade 9 Literature Essay
Hi,
If you are aiming for a Grade 9 in GCSE English Literature, there’s one thing you absolutely need to get right:
Essay structure
That’s exactly why I wanted to send this today.
Most students don’t lose marks because they don’t understand the text…
They lose marks because their essays are unclear, unfocused, and poorly structured.
I’ll be going into more detail on this in my upcoming YouTube video this weekend:
Here’s a simple structure I teach my students that consistently helps them push into the top grades in GCSE English Literature Paper 1 & 2.
PS: I will be teaching this during my ONE OFF Easter Literature classes on 6-12 April and you can sign up here:
How to Structure a Grade 9 Literature Essay:
1) Introduction: start with a THESIS statement – link it to the essay’s KEY WORDS, summarise the author’s main message and the points you will discuss in your essay.
2) Body paragraphs: this is the BULK of your marks! You need to write 3-4 detailed body paragraphs and this is how you develop EACH. You use a PEEL structure
(Point, Evidence, Explain, Link):
A) Point
Make a clear, specific argument.
(Not just “This shows…” — be precise.)
B) Evidence
Use a short, well-chosen quote.
C) Explain (this is where top students stand out)
-
Start with the writer’s technique
-
Then bring in context and how it shapes the writer’s intentions
-
Finally, explain the effect on the reader
PS: This is the step most students miss or keep too short — and it’s often the difference between a Grade 6 and a Grade 9.
D) Link
Always connect back to the key words in the question.
3) Conclusion: after you have written your 3 body paragraphs, with 3 detailed PEEL paragraphs, end by linking back to the exam question and a brief note on the writer’s message!
Stressed about your Literature GCSE Exams? Don’t worry – you don’t have to figure this out alone. Remember that over Easter on 6-12 April, I’ll run a series of one-off Literature classes showing you how to BOOST your GCSE Grades:

I’ll show students exactly how to apply this structure — and boost their GCSE grades in Literature Paper 1 and 2 exams in just 6 weeks — in my upcoming GCSE Literature Masterclasses running from 6–12 April 2026.
