5 Words to NEVER Use for SCROOGE in "A Christmas Carol" 🎄
Scrooge is a popular character and he may well come up in your Christmas Carol GCSE Exam. If he does come up in your GCSE English Literature exams, AVOID using weak, vague, or overly simplistic adjectives to describe him.
I went over this in my YouTube video (click on the image to watch):

Here are some of the worst choices students ALWAYS use for SCROOGE and better alternatives:
❌ Weak Adjectives → ✅ Stronger, More Precise Alternatives
-
❌ Mean → ✅ Miserly, Parsimonious, Cold-hearted
-
“Mean” is too generic. “Miserly” and “parsimonious” capture his obsession with money.
-
-
❌ Grumpy → ✅ Bitter, Misanthropic, Resentful
-
“Grumpy” sounds like Scrooge is just in a bad mood, while “misanthropic” suggests he actively dislikes people.
-
-
❌ Sad → ✅ Isolated, Tormented, Regretful
-
“Sad” is too simple. His loneliness and regret are more complex.
-
-
❌ Nice (after his transformation) → ✅ Benevolent, Generous, Compassionate
-
“Nice” is vague. His transformation makes him “benevolent” and “generous” instead.
-
-
❌ Scary → ✅ Intimidating, Callous, Merciless
-
“Scary” is too broad. “Callous” highlights his lack of empathy.
-
